During my time at Meta I worked on the AR Design Team defining the AR Product Family carefully weighing various options for different customer personas and the use cases each would provide.

As one of the Senior Prototypers on the team and later the Prototyping Manager I worked closely with various engineering teams, research labs and XFN partners to act as an interpreter between Design and Engineering often tackling the more technical design challenges that could block product from shipping if not resolved.

My work and passion drove me to create and run the Metaverse Interoperability XFN working group which gathered C-level support company wide. I gathered a collection of the greatest minds within the company to work out a roadmap to interoperable content that spans beyond Meta's Family of Apps and Products by working with existing Open Standards experts inside and outside the company.

Brief

The Augmented Calling workstream was tasked with making video chat more immersive and engaging by taking advantage of AR Glasses 3D capabilities, spatial awareness and volumetric capture using depth cameras as well as capture and examine the limitations that AR Glasses have like limited field of view, additive light and competing brightness from real-world.

As a first "time-machine" project investigating Augmented Calling's potential, the designs and prototypes uncovered a need to invest in additional areas of research so I created and briefly led a New Technology Introduction group dedicated to solving a number of potential pitfalls early on with the expectation of delivering a consumer ready UX by launch.

I presented the Unity prototype on a prototype headset to Zuck in person who made it a core experience for AR Glasses and showed it off at Connect. I then moved on to other projects, but the Augmented Calling team has grown significantly and continues to refine the Augmented Calling UX.

UX Design Unity Prototype UX Research Study Machine Learning Model Mobile App

Role

Product Design Prototyper

Brief

The Input workstream was tasked with coming up with new forms of interactions for AR Glasses. Much of this work is under NDA and has not been released to the public, however the EMG wearable bracelet and eye tracking have been discussed in the past publicly at Connect.

I made a number of novel prototypes around input that used Unity, Machine Learning, and mobile apps with help from the Industrial Design team and Reality Labs Research XFN partners. Similar to Aug Calling I did the pathfinding concepts that led to the growth of the Input Explorations team for AR.
